As we walked from our car, parked along the snowy downtown street of Keene, the wind chilled our bones, and we were anxious to warm up. Stepping into Luca’s Mediterranean Cafe, we were greeted with not only the warmth of the room, but also an incredible warm welcome. Upon, giving our name to the host, we were quickly directed to our cozy table.

Luca opened Luca’s Mediterranean Cafe in August of 2000. After deciding to make a big change and move from New York City, Luca and his wife settled back in New Hampshire, and opened Luca’s. Luca is funny, friendly, and easy to talk to. As Luca speaks on the start of his restaurant, you can see the passion he has for his craft. As we chatted about the area, I was pleasantly surprised that he was more than happy to recommend other restaurants in the area. “That’s how we are in this town, we look out for each other.” Luca stated. To me, that was an impressive statement. Working together, supporting others allows everyone to thrive. Well done.

The atmosphere at Luca’s Mediterranean Cafe…

The atmosphere at Luca’s was cozy and inviting. Pulling up my chair to the table, felt like I was settling into a familiar place. The soft lighting and the laughter from other the tables, surrounded us with the feeling of a delightful dinner party. The type of dinner party, where the host doesn’t miss a beat, the atmosphere is friendly and delightful, and the food is spectacular.

The Food at Luca’s Mediterranean Cafe….

Generally speaking, it’s hard to eat out when you have celiacs disease. One of the guests we were dining with has celiacs, and inquired about the gluten free options. Luca was sure to inform us that anything on the menu could be adjusted or tailored to fit the needs of those who are gluten free. The accommodations for a guest needing a gluten free menu were superb.

To start with, we ordered, the Almond Crusted Fried Mozzarella, Mediterranean Pork Street Tacos, and the Roasted Brussel Sprouts. We also ordered a Shrimp Special, which was Shrimp in a fabulous red sauce. The pesto that came with the Almond Crusted Fried Mozzarella was flavorful, a perfect addition to the plate.

Now, let’s talk about the bacon that came with the Roasted Brussel Sprouts. I could have just had a plate of that, but mixed with the brussel sprouts and honey, the salty and sweet flavor profiles, were spot on.

Next, we ordered entrees. Two of us ordered the carbonara special and added shrimp! The dish was incredible, with just the right amount of sauce. Dry pasta is not appealing, but pasta saturated with too sauce can overwhelm the dish and this entree was neither of those, it was perfectly balanced. In my opinion this dish should be on the menu because I have been craving it ever since our visit. We also ordered the Koto Avgolemono, and the Moroccan Lamb Tagine. The Lamb Tagine was delicious but spicy, so be sure that you love some spice if you order the Lamb Tagine.

Despite, this visit being our first, I can promise you, it won’t be our last.

Altogether, Luca’s was the ideal choice for a cold night, with great company. It’s not often that you walk into a restaurant for the first time and feel as if you’ve dined there many times before. Despite, this visit being our first, I can promise you, it won’t be our last.
