Why Visit San Diego?

When my cousin moved to San Diego, I gained the perfect excuse to visit one of California's most appealing destinations. While I miss having him close by, his move has opened the door to multiple trips exploring a city that truly offers a little bit of everythingvibrant city neighborhoods, beautiful beaches, and an incredible culinary scene.

This San Diego itinerary combines everything Road & Table travelers love most: local food, beautiful scenery, hidden gems, and enough flexibility to actually enjoy the destination instead of rushing from one attraction to the next. Whether you're visiting for a long weekend or your first Southern California getaway, this guide will help you experience the best of San Diego at a slower, more enjoyable pace.

Where to Eat in San Diego

Whether you're craving fresh seafood by the water, authentic tacos, or a memorable date night, San Diego's food scene has something for everyone. Here are a few of my favorite spots to add to your itinerary.

Best Breakfast

Morning Glory
One of San Diego's most popular brunch spots, Morning Glory is known for its playful atmosphere, creative breakfast dishes, and picture-perfect interiors. Be prepared to wait—it's worth it.

Best Tacos

Tacos El Gordo
A San Diego institution serving authentic Tijuana-style street tacos. Simple, flavorful, and consistently ranked among the best tacos in the city.

Oscar's Mexican Seafood
If fish tacos are on your must-eat list, Oscar's delivers. Their fresh seafood tacos are a local favorite and the perfect meal after a morning at the beach.

Best Waterfront Dining

Portside Pier
With multiple restaurants overlooking San Diego Bay, Portside Pier is a great place to enjoy fresh seafood, waterfront views, and a relaxed California atmosphere.

Poseidon on the Beach
Located directly on the sand in Del Mar, Poseidon offers front-row ocean views and an excellent seafood menu. It's especially beautiful at sunset.

 Best Date Night Restaurants

The Lion's Share
Tucked away near the waterfront, this intimate restaurant is one of San Diego's best hidden gems. Expect creative cocktails, a cozy atmosphere, and an adventurous menu that's perfect for a special evening.

Cowboy Star
If you're looking for an unforgettable steak dinner, Cowboy Star delivers. This East Village favorite pairs elevated American cuisine with rustic Western charm. With an in-house butcher shop featuring premium cuts of meat and expertly prepared steaks, it's an excellent choice for a celebratory dinner.

Best Hidden Gem

The Lion's Share
It's easy to walk right past The Lion's Share, but those who find it are rewarded with one of San Diego's best cocktail bars and a menu that's as unique as the atmosphere. It's a Road & Table favorite for a reason.

 Best Speakeasies

  • The Grass Skirt – A hidden tiki bar serving tropical cocktails in a fun, Polynesian-inspired setting.
  • Oculto 477 – An intimate tequila and mezcal speakeasy tucked behind Tahona Bar.
  • Raised by Wolves – One of the most unique cocktail experiences in San Diego, hidden behind a bottle shop with an unforgettable entrance.
  • False Idol – A world-renowned tiki bar known for immersive décor and expertly crafted rum cocktails.
  • Mothership – A futuristic, space-themed cocktail bar unlike anything else in San Diego, offering imaginative drinks and an equally creative atmosphere.

San Diego Travel Tips

  • Parking can be expensive in beach communities.
  • May often brings "May Grey" marine layer mornings.
  • Reservations are recommended for popular restaurants.
  • Bring layers even in summer.
  • Sunset is a daily event here—plan around it.

3 Day San Diego Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive & Explore Old Town San Diego

Afternoon

  • Arrive in San Diego, pick up your rental car, and check into your hotel.
  • Head to Old Town San Diego, often called the birthplace of California.
  • Spend a few hours exploring the colorful streets, hidden alleys, local shops, and historic buildings.
  • Don't miss the women hand-making fresh tortillas—a simple but memorable Old Town experience.

Late Lunch / Early Dinner

Casa de Reyes

Located in the heart of Old Town, Casa de Reyes is a great spot to kick off your San Diego getaway. Enjoy classic Mexican dishes on the outdoor patio and, if you're lucky, catch live music or entertainment on the stage just outside the restaurant.

Evening

Queenstown Public House

On your way back downtown, stop at Queenstown Public House for a nightcap. This cozy New Zealand-inspired gastropub offers craft cocktails and a welcoming atmosphere—perfect for winding down after a day of travel.

Road & Table Tip

Your first day is all about slowing down and settling in. Skip the packed sightseeing schedule and enjoy wandering Old Town at your own pace—you'll have plenty of time for San Diego's beaches and attractions over the next few days.

San Diego is a popular destination year-round, and many of the city's best restaurants fill up quickly, especially on weekends. While reservations aren't always necessary, I recommend making them whenever possible. Most restaurants allow you to cancel if your plans change, and having a reservation ensures you won't miss out on a spot you've been looking forward to trying. After all, nobody wants to spend their vacation waiting for a table when they could be out exploring.

Day 2: La Jolla, Pacific Beach & Sunset Cliffs

Morning

  • Start your day slowly with a coffee and a quick breakfast.
  • If you're staying at the Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina (my top hotel recommendation), spend a little time enjoying the pool before heading out.
  • Make your way to La Jolla, one of San Diego's most beautiful coastal neighborhoods.
  • Stroll along the cliffs, watch the sea lions, browse the shops, and take in the ocean views.

Road & Table Tip

The areas with the largest concentration of sea lions can be surprisingly smelly, but don't let that stop you. The scenery is worth it!

Afternoon

Lunch: Option 1: Cove House

Grab lunch overlooking the water and be sure to order the Candy Bacon—it's a must-try.

Option 2: Picnic with a View

Stop by Valley Farm Market and pick up supplies for a picnic lunch. Find a scenic spot along the La Jolla coastline and enjoy one of the best views in Southern California.

After Lunch: Pacific Beach

No San Diego itinerary is complete without a visit to Pacific Beach.

While Pacific Beach can feel a little rough around the edges at times—with a noticeable homeless population and the unmistakable smell of marijuana—it's also part of the authentic San Diego experience.

  • Walk the lively beachfront strip.
  • Browse the local shops.
  • Pick up a souvenir (I found some adorable sweatshirts here).
  • Grab a drink at Pacific Ale House and head upstairs for views overlooking both the ocean and the bustling street below.

Evening: Sunset Cliffs

Check the sunset time and plan to arrive at Sunset Cliffs Natural Park at least 45-60 minutes before sunset.

This is one of the most breathtaking places in San Diego and one of my favorite spots in the city.

Highlights include:

  • Dramatic ocean cliffs
  • Scenic walking paths
  • Hidden sea caves
  • Tide pools at low tide
  • Incredible sunset views over the Pacific

Important Tips:

  • Parking is free but fills quickly.
  • Stay well back from cliff edges as erosion is common.
  • Wear sturdy shoes if exploring near the caves or shoreline.
  • Public restroom facilities are very limited.

Dinner

Ironside Fish & Oyster

After a day spent exploring San Diego's coastline, continue the seaside theme with dinner at Ironside Fish & Oyster in Little Italy. Known for fresh seafood, oysters, and a stylish nautical atmosphere, it's the perfect way to end a day by the water.

Road & Table Tip

Day 2 is all about embracing San Diego's coastal lifestyle. Don't rush from stop to stop. Leave plenty of time for wandering, people watching, and simply enjoying the ocean views that make this city so special.

Day 3: Coronado Island & A Night Out in Little Italy

Morning

  • Start the day with coffee and breakfast at Morning Glory.
  • Slow things down and enjoy a relaxing morning by the pool.
  • Bring along a good book and soak up the California sunshine. (For this trip, I recommend The Deceived by Brett Battles—a fast-paced Southern California thriller that's perfect for vacation reading. Looking for more destination-inspired books? Visit my Wanderlust Reads book club for monthly travel-inspired reading recommendations.)

Late Morning

Choose one of two classic San Diego experiences:

Option 1: Harbor Cruise

  • See San Diego from the water.
  • Enjoy views of the skyline, harbor, naval ships, and Coronado Bridge.

Option 2: Coronado Island

  • Drive across the iconic Coronado Bridge.
  • Spend time exploring Coronado's charming downtown area and beautiful beach.

Lunch

Bluewater Boathouse Seafood Grill

Located right on the water, Bluewater Boathouse is a great spot for a leisurely lunch with harbor views and fresh seafood.

Afternoon

Choose your own pace:

  • Relax on Coronado Beach, consistently ranked among the best beaches in the United States.
  • Browse the shops around Orange Avenue.
  • Head back to your hotel and spend the afternoon poolside.

Don't Miss

Hotel del Coronado

Whether you're staying there or not, the historic Hotel del Coronado deserves a visit. Wander the grounds, explore the shops, or grab a drink overlooking the beach.

Optional Experiences

  • Rent bikes and explore Coronado Island.
  • Take a harbor cruise.
  • Enjoy a beach picnic.
  • Browse local boutiques and galleries.
  • Walk the shoreline at sunset.

Evening

Head back to your hotel, freshen up, and get ready for your final night in San Diego.

Dinner

Barbusa – Little Italy

For your last dinner, slow down and savor the evening. Barbusa is one of my favorite restaurants in Little Italy, and the Short Rib Lasagna is an absolute must-try. Just be prepared—the portions are generous!

Alternative: Cowboy Star

If you're looking for an unforgettable steak dinner, Cowboy Star delivers. This East Village favorite pairs elevated American cuisine with rustic Western charm, creating a dining experience that feels both sophisticated and welcoming. With an in-house butcher shop featuring premium cuts of meat and a menu built around expertly prepared steaks, it's the perfect spot for a special night out in San Diego.

Nightcap

The Lion's Share

End your San Diego getaway with a cocktail at The Lion's Share. Tucked away near the waterfront, this cozy spot is known for its creative drinks and intimate atmosphere.

Road & Table Tip

One of the best parts of San Diego is that it never feels rushed. Use your final full day to slow down, enjoy the sunshine, and leave room for spontaneous discoveries. Sometimes the most memorable moments happen when you don't have an itinerary at all.

 Final Thoughts

San Diego is one of those destinations that keeps you coming back. Maybe it's the laid-back beach culture, the incredible food scene, or the way every neighborhood has its own unique personality. Whatever it is, this city has a way of making you slow down and savor the moment.

I hope this itinerary helps you experience the best of San Diego without feeling like you have to check every attraction off a list. Wander a little longer, order dessert, stay for one more sunset, and leave room for unexpected discoveries—those are often the moments you'll remember most.

If you use this itinerary on your own San Diego adventure, I'd love to hear about it! And if you'd rather have someone create a personalized, food-first itinerary just for you, I'd be honored to help you plan your next unforgettable journey.
