Portsmouth, New Hampshire {Out Of The House}

Portsmouth, New Hampshire {Out Of The House}

Portsmouth, New Hampshire

My husband and I just recently celebrated our 11th wedding anniversary. Fall is my favorite time of year but between our boys playing football and my husband’s fall work schedule it has become our busiest time of year! We needed to get away for a night and just spend time with each other! THAT IS SO IMPORTANT!

We settled on going away for the night to Portsmouth, New Hampshire. It’s only a two and a half hour drive from Voluntown. We dropped our boys off at school and we were off. We stopped to get a coffee and some sweet treats from our favorite bakery. I’m sad to say that our favorite spot for a weekend treat has now closed after 50 years of business.

After grabbing our treats we started the drive. We wanted to take the back roads so we could enjoy the foliage. This year the leaves have been a reminder of how amazing God is! The colors have been stunning! Small country roads are one of the greatest things New England has to offer so we wanted to take advantage of that!

Here is the route we took:

We drove Route 169 through Canterbury and Woodstock. We followed Route 169 until we reached Route 197. After traveling on 197 we picked up route 12 through Webster, Mass. Right outside of Webster we followed Sutton Road to Sutton Ave. Sutton Ave. brought us to West Sutton where we jumped on West Sutton Road. We countined along West Sutton Road until we were able to pick up West Main Street, which we stayed on until we were able to pick up Route 9 which brought us to 90. At that point we followed the main Highway 90 to 95 and followed 95 all the way into Portsmouth! I know crazy right?!?! But I have to tell you if you want a nice fall drive, this was awesome! It was great driving, sipping on my coffee and nibbling on my delish sweet treats. It’s nice to shut the world out sometimes and just drive!

We always stay at a Marriott if we can. We are Marriott Rewards members, if you are interested in knowing more about the rewards program please email me at voluntownhousewife@yahoo.com and we can chat about it! You won’t be sorry!

On our way to Portsmouth we were able to use online check in! It’s great it allows you to tell the hotel what time you will be arriving. It’s a feature only available to reward members. We stayed at the Portsmouth Seacoast. AWESOME!!

We picked thePortsmouth Seascoast because we wanted to splurge on a nice dinner and the price of the room was great! It’s a great option if you want to save some money for all of the delish food that Portsmouth has to offer! That’s the beauty of a Marriott you won’t be disappointed and I am always confident we will have a clean room.

After check in we went downtown. Downtown was only a 5 min. drive, if that from our hotel. The parking in Portsmouth was great. I’m sure at night it’s harder to find parking but they have a lot of lots and a large parking garage so you don’t have to park on the street.

We knew we were going to have a nice dinner so we didn’t want to spoil it by eating a lot so we stopped at the Portsmouth Gas Light Co. and we shared some fish tacos and got a drink.

Afterwards we walked around town. They had some really neat fall decorations out and we just enjoyed the stroll around town.

We then stopped into the Thirsty Moose. Let me tell you about the Thirsty Moose. It looks like a dive bar from the outside. I won’t lie, I was a little nervous about it. We got in and I was impressed. The atmosphere is really nothing crazy but the amount of beer on tap is unreal! You can do all kinds of flights and taste all kinds of beer. If you or someone you know is a beer lover you have to stop in! Plus how fancy are those antler flight holders! I love them!!

After that we headed back to our hotel to get ready to out to dinner. I have to tell you that MOMBO is one of my all time favorite places to eat! So here is my honest statement on eating at MOMBO………

1. It’s expensive, so don’t go thinking you are getting a cheap meal. The price doesn’t bother me one bit. The food is fantastic and it’s worth every penny!

2. Every time I go I get a major attitude because I don’t think I am going to like anything on the menu……..NOT TRUE everything I have ever ordered, even though I thought I was settling on it, turned out to be AMAZING!

3. You have to be willing to go out of the box and try new things and trust me this is the place to do it!

The next day we drove through Essex, MA and did some antiquing and took our time getting home.

This was a great quick get-a-way for us and I encourage you to give Portsmouth, NH a try.
